LASER PARTICLE SIZE ANALYSIS
PMET provides laser particle size analysis in
addition to screen analysis and micro-sieve analysis. A Microtrac S3000 Particle
Analysis System uses a laser diffraction system to measure
particles down to 0.01 micrometers. The microtrac analysis output is a data
sheet containing the distribution of particle sizes, a cumulative percent
graphic and various calculated values. This system is used to measure
particle size distribution of ash, minerals, cement and industrial products.

OPTICAL MICROSCOPY
The optical microscopy lab
uses a Leitz metallographic microscope, a Leitz ore microscope, a Wild M8
bench microscope, and a Polaroid MP4 overhead camera. The lab conducts
metallographic studies of microstructure, hardness profile, inclusion
analysis, and case depth. Ore microscopy includes ore mineralogy and modal
analysis of liberation-locking occurrence of phases. Optical microscopy is
an essential tool in failure analysis, corrosion studies, optimizing
metals and minerals processing, and evaluating structures.
These images show preferential corrosion of ferrite in the weld structure
of an austenitic stainless steel tube. This is typical of weld failure due
to chloride attack. The information confirms that chlorine, which was
introduced into the tube, is the cause of the failure.
CARBON / SULFUR DETERMINATION
Direct determination of carbon
and sulfur content in minerals, metals, and byproducts is achieved with an
induction furnace and two infrared analyzers. The Eltra CS800 Analyzer measures
6.116% carbon in tungsten carbide with an accuracy of 180ppm. This
capability supports our coal combustion ash and tungsten carbide
development projects.
PRECISION SAMPLING
PMET's many years of
experience in mercury removal and recovery and in processing and analyzing
primary gold and other mineral ores has provided us with precision
sampling expertise in non-uniform materials, especially materials
exhibiting a "nugget effect", and in obtaining small,
representative samples from large volumes of starting material. Since
accurate analyses depend upon representative sampling, PMET employs latest
state-of -the art crushing, grinding, blending, and splitting techniques
to assure precise and meaningful results. Over the years, many clients who
perform their own analytical testing have come to depend upon PMET to
obtain representative samples from large volume samples. Materials
received for sampling are carefully logged throughout the sampling process
and portions of each sample are retained for future testing and comparison
prior to returning the samples to the client for analysis
